Homeschooling High School...Con't

As I read over the subjects that Gracie is studying this year, I heaved a sigh because she IS doing a LOT. She is a champion and works really hard at keeping up with her workload.

So...how do we keep up with it all? First of all, we use a weekly schedule that helps Gracie and I plan out our week. For the first time this school year, Gracie gets a blank one and plans out her week and then lets ME know how she would like to get her work done. In past years, I made the plan and then she executed. Seeing her mature in this area of self-discipline and responsibility is wonderful.

At the end of each day (around 2pm), we go over her list so that I can check for completion. We also go over anything that needs my attention: literature discussions, help on math/chemistry problems, reviewing answers to government comprehension questions, etc.

I grade her work sometime before dinner and then she takes care of any corrections/leftover schoolwork after dinner is done and the kitchen is clean. She RARELY has homework because she works so hard during the day.

In terms of keeping up with Gracie's credit hours and work completed, I rely heavily on forms from Barb Shelton's book Highschool Form+U+La.

I've also gotten many ideas for high school from Homeschooling for Excellence by David and Micki Colfax. They homeschooled their boys and they all went to Harvard! What's more interesting is that they didn't do formal school at ...

I've also loved reading Morning by Morning by Paul Penn-Nabritt. If the number of homeschooler's are few, the number of African-American homeschoolers are definitely fewer. This book accounts one AA family's homeschooling journey and they too homeschooled their sons to the Ivy League.

So hopefully that explains more of how we schedule ourselves around here to plow through high school journey. Hope it helps someone :)

It really DOES help! I've been contemplating homeschooling my daughter next year (she'll be a freshman in high school). I'm just REALLY, REALLY afraid. I don't think that I'm consistent/organized enough.

Has your daughter always been homeschooled?
